Exactly a year ago, I entered 70.3 Antwerp as my first ever triathlon. As an ex-GB runner I had approached Planet X explaining my story:that I was a runner, but knew I could bike and swim OK – would Planet Xhelp me out with a bike? Completely untested, Planet X explained thatthey had already assigned their sponsorship support for the year, but itwas an interesting story and they would take a punt. So off I went on mynew Exocet to race my 1st ever triathlon. It went well – 1st non-pro and6th overall. I was hooked.I’ve since competed as a pro for the remainder of the year and got a string of decent results. 2 fifth places at 70.3 South Africa and UK were improvements, but I promised Planet X back in July last year that my goal for this season was to podium at 70.3 races. So I was over the moon this weekend when exactly a year after my first triathlon things went right and I was able to nail a result I can be proud of. At 27 min, the swim went pretty well (a 3 minute improvement on last year) although there are fewer feet to hang onto in the pro field! The bike was a dream and my 2h27 90km was 7 min faster than last year, possibly down to my new disk! My run was again the fastest of the day and I managed to run from 5th to 2nd. It was a privilege and eye-opener to race against arguably the best triathlete in the world in Nicola Spirig who was head and shoulders above the rest of us.Exactly a year on, thanks to the support of Planet X I think I can now call myself a triathlete.
